چکیده

We present Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images of a portion of the bright northeast rim of NGC 6888, the nebular shell physically associated with the Wolf-Rayet star HD 192163. The exposures are taken in the light of Hα λ6563, [O III] λ5007, and [S II] λλ6717, 6731. The images are used to constrain models of the ionization structure of nebular features. From these models we infer physical conditions within features, and estimate elemental abundances within the nebula. The results of our analysis, together with the degree of small scale inhomogeneity apparent in the images, call into question the assumptions underlying traditional methodologies for interpretation of nebular spectroscopy. The thermal pressure of photoionized clumps is higher than the inferred internal pressure of the shocked stellar wind, implying that the current physical conditions have changed significantly over less than a few thousand years. These results are discussed within the context of published three-wind evolutionary scenarios for the formation of the nebula. We also discuss the nature of a back-illuminated radiative shock driven into the cavity surrounding NGC 6888. Subject headings: H II regions – ISM: individual (NGC 6888) – ISM: kinematics and dynamics – stars: individual (HD 192163) – stars: mass loss

Wolf-Rayet and LBV Nebulae as the Result of Variable and Non-Spherical Stellar Winds

The physical basis for interpreting observations of nebular morphology around massive stars in terms of the evolution of the central stars is reviewed, and examples are discussed, including NGC 6888, OMC-1, and η Carinae.

The Starburst - Interstellar Medium Interaction in NGC 1569 I . Location and Nature of He ii Sources

We present the detection of He ii sources in the Im galaxy NGC 1569 from HST WFPC2 imagery. Out of the fifteen detections, seven were Wolf-Rayet stars, five were stellar clusters with associated He ii emission, and three were sources of unknown origin. The detected Wolf-Rayet stars’ colors and magnitudes are similar to Large Magellanic Cloud late-type WN stars. The physical origin of the other ...

Hot Massive Stars: The Impact of HST

We review the contribution of Hubble Space Telescope to the study of hot, luminous stars. Optical and IR imaging have permitted spatially resolved observations of young, massive clusters within Local Group galaxies, such as R136, NGC 3603 and Arches, revealing unprecedented concentrations of very massive O stars. UV spectroscopy of field OB stars in the Magellanic Clouds have provided suitable ...

A Wolf - Rayet / black - hole X - ray binary candidate in NGC 300

Context. Wolf Rayet/black hole binaries are believed to exist as a later evolutionary product of high-mass X-ray binaries. Hundreds of such binaries may exist in galaxies, but only a few of them are close enough to be observed as X-ray binaries. Only a couple of candidates have been reported so far. Aims. Based on XMM-Newton observations, we report the positional coincidence of the brightest X-...

We discuss HST FOS ultraviolet spectroscopy and NICMOS near-infrared photometry of four young super star clusters in the central region of the irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569. The new observations coupled with previous HST WFPC2 photometry and ground-based optical spectroscopy allow us to isolate and age-date the hot and cool stellar components of these massive clusters. We analyze the two ...
